The Lost Mother, by Mary McGarry Morris

Set during the 1930’s Great Depression this well written novel really captures the viewpoint and emotions of 12 year old Thomas and 8 year old Margaret, in this at times harrowing story. The author authentically recreates the era, the feel of rural poverty in Vermont, and the lack of opportunity in terrible economic times, with the resulting desperation and isolation.
