Beastly Things: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery, by Donna Leon

Commissario Brunetti is on the trail of a murderer when a body, missing a shoe, is found floating in one of Venice’s canals. He is aided by Inspector Vianello and the always capable computer whiz Signorina Elettra. There are no reports of a missing person so Brunetti and Vianello follow the trail of the shoe to uncover its owner’s identity. As always, the Mafia has its tentacles just below the surface. Corruption and kickbacks at a local slaughterhouse also figure in the plot. Take a flying armchair to Venice and enjoy this or one of the other books in this excellent series.
