Trains and Lovers, by Alexander McCall Smith

This short novel by the author of the popular No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series tells of four strangers who share a compartment on a train from Edinburgh to London. Each tells a story about love in their life which also involves trains. Andrew, an art gallery employee spots an anachronistic steam train in a painting he is given to examine that had been attributed to a 17th century artist. Kay relates a story about her parents and their life in the far reaches of the Australian outback. Hugh tells of a girl he met after he missed a train. David sees two people on a train platform which brings back memories of an intense boyhood friendship. This one is not a page turner by any means, but I find McCall Smith to be a thoughtful and perceptive writer.
