The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, by T. R. Reid

Other countries have health care systems which cover more people, at less cost, and usually with better results than the American system.  Journalist T. R. Reid traveled the world to examine how they do it: what works, what doesn’t, and what we can learn.  Despite the weighty topic, it’s both a quick read and humorous, with a lot of timely food for thought.

If you prefer the video version, the PBS FRONTLINE documentary which which preceded the book, Sick Around the World, is available online.

And for another discussion of how the experiences of other countries can be helpful, see local author Atul Gawande‘s article earlier this year in the New Yorker, “Getting There from Here.”
